Instructions: Application for adult (over 18)

Carefully read through the following instructions well in advance of the time of application, the application must be complete and ready to be submitted upon arrival to the booked time.

When applying for a Swedish passport/national ID card, a verification of the applicant’s citizenship is carried out, and the applicant is obliged to prove their Swedish citizenship at the time of application. If you apply for a Swedish passport/national ID card abroad, you must always submit a form containing information that forms the basis for the citizenship verification, as well as the supporting documents required in the individual case. Please note that this applies even if you have previously had a Swedish passport/national ID card.

To apply for a Swedish passport/national ID card in Australia as an adult (over 18), the following is required*. Please note that all documents must be presented in original.

  • A Swedish personal identity number or coordination number.

  • A pre-booked appointment. Please arrive no earlier than maximum 15 minutes before the booked time. 

  • Personal presence at the time of application. The visit takes approximately 15 minutes. Information regarding photo and fingerprints

  • Make sure that personal information in the Swedish Population Register is correct. The name that is registered there is the basis for the issuing of a Swedish passport/national ID card.

  • The form "Information for verification of Swedish citizenship" must be clearly completed before arrival.

  • If you have a previous Swedish passport/national ID card, this must be presented, valid or expired. 

  • You must prove your identity with a valid ID document. If you do not have a valid Swedish ID document, the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra accepts ID documents from Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific States**. If you do not have a valid ID document at all, an approved person must accompany you and certify your identity at the time of application.

  • The application fee equivalent to SEK 1,600 is paid in local currency (AUD) at the time of application. Payment at the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra can be made by card (VISA/Mastercard), a physical bank card that belongs to you or an accompanying person is required.

  • If the new ordinary passport/national ID card is to be forwarded from the Embassy for delivery at one of Sweden's Honorary Consulates, a postage fee is added, which is paid in local currency (AUD) at the time of application.

  • If your previous Swedish passport/national ID card is lost or stolen, a police report must be made and the police report included. The lost or stolen passport/ID card is then invalidated by the Embassy. 

  • If you have a citizenship other than Swedish, a certificate showing the date on which the foreign citizenship was acquired must be presented. If you became a dual citizen before 1 July 2001, you must present a certificate proving that you regained Swedish citizenship (does not apply to persons who received dual citizenship at birth).

  • If you only have Swedish citizenship, you must present a certificate proving that you were not granted citizenship before 1 July 2001 in your current country of residence or country of visit abroad. This can usually be proven with proof of a visa or residence permit granted after the above date (printed copy accepted). In some cases, a certificate can also be required that proves that you have not become a citizen of any other countries outside of Sweden where you have been resident.

  • If you did not acquire Swedish citizenship at birth, a Swedish citizenship certificate must be presented.

  • If you were born outside Sweden, a birth certificate must be presented. In a first-time application, the Swedish Tax Agency's decision document regarding name and coordination number must also be presented.

  • If you acquired Swedish citizenship at birth, are born and reside outside of Sweden and are over 22 years old, a certificate must be presented proving that you retained Swedish citizenship before you turned 22.

 

*Additional documents may be required in some cases.
