Working holiday in Sweden

If you are a young citizen of Australia (or another country that Sweden has an agreement with) who wants to experience life in Sweden and Swedish culture for a period of one year on a working holiday, you require a residence permit.

Applications for residence permits for Sweden are processed by the Swedish Migration Agency in Sweden. If you want to apply for a residence permit for a working holiday in Sweden (also known as a “working holiday visa”), your application can be submitted online through the Swedish Migration Agency’s website.

A residence permit for a working holiday in Sweden can be used once, and it cannot be extended. Please note that a working holiday maker’s stay in Sweden is temporary. It is normally not possible to apply for another type of residence permit from within Sweden when a residence permit for a working holiday is about to expire.

From when an application for a residence permit for a working holiday in Sweden has been lodged, it usually takes approximately 4 months until a case is settled and a decision is made.

When lodging an application for a residence permit for a working holiday in Sweden, a start date and an end date for the visit in Sweden must be selected, and the total period of the visit should be one year. Please note that individual applications are not processed based on the selected start date of the visit. When selecting the start date of the visit, please take the approximate processing time mentioned above into account.

If you are granted a residence permit for a working holiday in Sweden, you will also be granted a work permit for Sweden which is valid for the same period as the residence permit. Once granted, the permits will be valid between set dates based on information in the application. The start date or end date of the permits cannot be amended.
