Apply for a Visa

If you want to visit Sweden and you are a citizen of non-EU country, you may need to apply for a visa.

Applying via VFS Global in Egypt

To improve the service available to those applying for a visa, the embassy cooperates with VFS Global. You present your application in person to VFS Global and they can also provide you with information and other kinds of service. When the decision has come through, after about 15 days, you collect your passport and your visa at the VFS Global.

PLEASE NOTE that no documents should be sent to the embassy. A basic rule is that all documents should be submitted in original. Some documents you only need to show in original at VFS Global, while a copy of the document submitted. Note that the documents submitted are a basis for the examination of the application to be started. It does not mean that the visa application must be granted.

Applications must be made in person at VFS Global. You don’t need to visit the Embassy at all.

VFS Global in Egypt charge a fee of 31 EURO, but paid in EGP per application (over and above the visa fee) for their services.  Check the VFS Global website for the application centre’s address and opening hours and for other practical information.

Applying via VFS Global in Alexandria

Applying on a paper form

If you cannot or do not wish to apply via the VFS Global (Swedish Visa Application Centre), you present your application forms and other documents in person at the Swedish embassy. You have to make an appointment, and the processing period will be longer.

How to proceed:

1. Prepare the documentation

Check which documents and personal information you need. You must for instance have arranged for a passport (valid for 6 months from the returning date) and medical travel insurance, and have booked an air ticket (although we advise you to delay payment until your visa has been granted), and you must also have an invitation from the person you will be visiting in Sweden.

2. Make an appointment

VFS Global will assist you, free of charge, to make an appointment on phone number +20 (0) 2 333 23 004. Appointments to apply direct at the Embassy has longer waiting time than submitting your application at VFS Global.

3. Pay the application fees

You pay a fee for your visa application. The money is not refunded if your application is refused.

Fee for visa application

Adults:  1620 EGP (80 Euro)

Children aged 6 - 12, whom didn't turn 12 yeat 810 EGP (40 Euro)

The application fee is tied to the euro and is revised in the event of any major shift in the exchange rate. 

VFS.Global charges a fee of of 31 EURO, but paid in EGP per application, in addition to the above fee for the visa.

How to pay

The visa fee is collected for the Embassy of Sweden in Cairo by VFS Global. You pay the fee in cash at VFS Global when you are giving in your application.

If you are applying directly at the Embassy, you pay the fee in advance to Embassy bank account CIB 100025235724 before your appointment at the Embassy. You may also pay with credit card when submitting your applicaiton at the Embassy. 

Attention: Payment of the visa fee and the service fee does not guarantee that a visa will be granted. The visa fee and the service fee are both non-refundable and non-transferable if the visa application is denied by the administration or if the applicant decides to terminate his or her application.

Fee exemptions

The following pay no fees:

  • Children under six years of age.
  • School pupils, students, research students and accompanying teachers on study or training trips.
  • Third-country researchers travelling for the purpose of pursuing scientific research.
  • Representatives of non-governmental organisations who are aged 25 or under, who take part in seminars, conferences, sports events, cultural events or educational events organised by NGOs.
  • Relatives of citizens of the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland, if they travel together with them or will be meeting them in connection with the trip. Read more about which individuals are counted as relatives on the Swedish Migration Board website. Relatives of Swedish citizens have to pay a fee for visa applications.

Citizens of countries that have signed visa facilitation agreements with the EU pay a reduced fee of (35 Euro) 630 EGP or are exempt from payment. This applies to citizens of: 

  • Albania
  • Armenia
  • Azerbaijan
  • Bosnia-Herzegovina
  • Cape Verde
  • Georgia
  • Macedonia
  • Moldova
  • Montenegro
  • Russia
  • Serbia
  • Ukraine

4. Visit the embassy

Bring the completed application form, all the required documents and a receipt of payment  (that should be previously paid in Egyptian pound at the bank before applying) to the embassy at the appointed time. If you do not have all the documents with you, there is a risk that your application will be rejected.  During the visit, you may be required to answer some additional questions. Furthermore, applicants (from 12 years of age) must have his or her biometric information taken (ten fingerprints and a photograph). The application fee should be paid in Egyptian pound.

All family members who apply at the same time – including children – must visit the embassy.

5. Wait for the decision

When you present your application, you are told when you can collect the decision and your passport. It usually takes 15 days.
