Travel insurance

Visa and residence permit applicants are required to have medical travel insurance. It must cover any costs that may be incurred in connection with emergency medical aid, urgent hospital treatment or transport to the country of origin for medical reasons or in the event of death. The insurance is to cover costs totaling at least EUR 30 000 and be valid in all Schengen countries and throughout your stay.

As of January 15 2024, medical travel insurance is mandatory even for those who apply for residence permit for visit.

When applying, you must be able to provide proof that you have medical travel insurance. You should also take your insurance certificate with you during the trip since you may need to show it, e.g. at an entry checkpoint.

You should attach a copy of the insurance to your application, and only show the original document to prove its authenticity. If you apply for a single entry visa you have to provide an insurance that covers the whole visa period. If you apply for a multiple entry visa you only have to provide an insurance that covers the first intended stay in Sweden. The Embassy encourages applicants to choose an insurance company which repays the insurance fee if the visa application is rejected.

Certain occupational groups may be exempt from the insurance requirement due to their already being similarly insured in connection with their work.
