Driving in Sweden

You can use a driving licence from a non-EEA state (including South Africa) in Sweden, provided that:

  • your driving licence is valid in the country where it was issued;
  • you have not been registered as a resident in Sweden for more than one year;
  • you do not also hold a Swedish driving licence that has been suspended or revoked; and
  • that you have not exchanged the driving licence for a Swedish driving licence.

If your driving licence does not have a photograph, it is only valid together with an identification document with a photograph.

If your licence is not designed according to the United Nations Conventions on Road Traffic, and if it is not also written in English, German or French, it is only valid in combination with a certified translation into English, German, French, Swedish, Danish or Norwegian.
