Sweden joins efforts together with Lithuania and the EU to support Armenia in combatting the COVID-19 virus, by facilitating a humanitarian assistance transport to Yerevan

Late afternoon on Friday, 19 June, an airplane from the Lithuanian Air Force landed in Yerevan, having transported from Lithuania a medical team of eleven persons and around 1.5 tons of equipment, to be used in the fight against the COVID-19 in Armenia.

After a request from the Government of Armenia for assistance to fight COVID-19, the Government of Lithuania organized a special humanitarian mission. It was comprised of a medical team of eleven persons, bringing with them around 1.5 tons of medical equipment. 

The medical team – anesthesiologists, reanimatologists, emergency doctors and caregivers - arrived in Yerevan on Friday, 19 June, to work directly with COVID-19 patients. Three experts will work with the Armenian institutions and provide recommendations on organizational-logistical aspects of the fight against COVID-19. All members of the group volunteered to take part in this mission and are planning to stay in Armenia for fourteen days.

The costs of the mission are covered by the Government of Lithuania, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, with around 50 000 euros, and the EU.

Upon arrival, members of the mission were welcomed by Avet Adonts, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anahit Avanesyan, First Deputy Minister of Health, Inga Stanytė-Toločkienė, Ambassador of Lithuania, Andrea Wiktorin, Ambassador of EU Delegation in Armenia, and Birger Karlsson, Chargé d’Affaires of the Swedish Embassy.

Currently, medical team is in Yerevan working in two different hospitals and the expert team has started its work with the Armenian institutions.
