To coincide with the 250th Anniversary of Cook’s first voyage to the Pacific, the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra, together with the Solander Gallery in Wellington, presents ‘Paradise Lost – Daniel Solander’s Legacy’ – an art exhibition to commemorate the legacy of the Swedish botanist Daniel Solander and the first encounter between Sweden and the Pacific Region.
The exhibition Paradise Lost consists of artwork by ten New Zealand artists selected each bring a unique vision to this historical event and collectively put flesh to many of Daniel Solander’s facets, not least of which are his scientific credentials in botany, his cross-cultural awareness and his enthusiasm for the preservation of the unique species of the natural world.
Participating artists are, John Pusateri (Auckland), Alexis Neal (Auckland) Dagmar Dyck (Auckland), John McLean (New Plymouth), Tabatha Forbes (New Plymouth), Michel Tuffery (Wellington), Sharnae Beardsley (Christchurch), Jo Ogier (Christchurch), Lynn Taylor (Dunedin) and Jenna Packer (Dunedin).
Paradise Lost was launched at the Solander Gallery in Wellington in February 2019 and has been touring New Zealand during 2019 abd early 2020, at galleries and museums in Wellington, Russell, Dargaville, Whangarei, Auckland, New Plymouth and Blenheim.
During 2019 the exhibition was also shown at Piteå Museum, in the home town of Daniel Solander, Piteå, Sweden.
This year, we are delighted to bring Paradise Lost to Australia, to be shown at the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra from 2 to 22 September 2020 and at the Australian National Maritime Museum from 9 October 2020 to 14 February 2021.
