World Environment Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972, on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. This year, the theme of the World Environment Day is “Beat Plastic Pollution”.
The Swedish company Celloplast, invented the first plastic bag in 1965. Today this invention is one of the biggest threats to our oceans. If we chose not to take action, there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans by 2050.
The Swedish government together with the Fiji government arranged the Ocean Conference at the UN 5-9 June 2017.
In March 2018, the Swedish government decided on a new strategy for Sweden’s global development cooperation in the areas of environmental sustainability, sustainable climate and ocean, and sustainable use of natural resources. This strategy applies for the five years 2018-2022.
