We have seen Peng Shuai’s presumed remarks and footage from her public appearance. However, the reports, both about the allegations of abuse and the fact that she had not been seen for 2 weeks, remain very worrying.
We are not in a position to comment on the allegations themselves, but we urge a full and transparent investigation. The requests for reliable information [from fellow tennis players and the Women’s Tennis Association] are legitimate and remain. We still call on the Chinese government to provide independent and verifiable proof of her well-being and whereabouts.
We hope that she can resume her normal sporting and non-sporting activities soon.
