How inclusive is peacebuilding in the digital age?

How inclusive is peacebuilding in the digital age?

To mark the International Women’s Day the Swedish Dialogue Institute for the Middle East and North Africa and the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IFI) at the AUB hosted a webinar titled “How inclusive is peacebuilding in the digital age?” on March 6th.

This was the third year that the two organizations co-hosted webinars on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) on the occasion of the International Women’s Day (IWD). The webinar in 2021 was titled “How Inclusive is Inclusive Peacebuilding” and highlighted the need to diversify peacebuilding processes through a multi-layered inclusive approach across various sectors and actors.  In 2022 the webinar was titled “How Inclusive is a Sustainable Tomorrow?”, addressing the relationship between the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda (WPS) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Like previous years’ webinars, the focus of the discussion was on inclusivity in peacebuilding, recognizing that diverse actors in society are needed to prevent conflicts, to protect, to solve conflicts, and in the relief and reconstruction work. This is highly relevant also in the digital age.

Impressive speakers, from different parts of the MENA region and from different walks of life, were invited to share their expertise, insights and reflections.

After a keynote speech by UN Women’s regional director Susanne Mikhail we had a fascinating panel discussion with Hala Bugaighis (analyst from Libya), Ayah Bdeir (entrepreneur and social activist from Lebanon), Nadim Houry (Executive Director of the Arab Reform Initiative) and Nadine Weheba (researcher from School of Business at the AUC). The webinar was co-moderated by Karma Ekmekji from IFI and Charlotta Sparre, director of the Dialogue Institute.

The webinar is available to watch on YouTube.
