World NGO day

Civil society has a pivotal role to play in a vigorous society

Today is the World NGO day, and we have reason to celebrate! Sweden has always been an ardent supporter of civil society all over the world. Today, we take another important step as part of the EU. The text below is a statement released today by the EU in Jordan, that recognizes the crucial role of civil society in achieving a vibrant democracy and sustainable development in Jordan.

The statement is also available in Arabic on EU’s website.

“As we celebrate World NGO Day today, the European Union in Amman pays tribute to the role of civil society in helping advance peace, security and prosperity at the local, regional and global levels.

Civil society has a pivotal role to play in a vigorous society. NGOs voice citizens’ concerns, interests and rights. They are critical drivers of development and sustainable peace, and can contribute to opening the space for debate and discussion.

For an independent and flourishing civil society, the protection of the freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly are critical. NGOs must be able to register without unjustified restrictions and have access to funding.

As a key partner in the region, the EU supports Jordan's development and democratisation, which underpin the country's long-term stability.  The EU will continue to support civil society and NGOs in Jordan, which are also important implementing partners, in this joint effort.
