Sweden and Mozambique celebrated 40 years of energy cooperation

The Embassy of Sweden invited partners within the energy sector to celebrate 40 years of energy cooperation between Sweden and Moçambique. The Swedish contribution to Mozambique between 1978 - 2018 amounts to almost SEK 1,5 Billion.

On Wednesday 26th of September, the Embassy of Sweden invited energy cooperation partners to the Swedish residence to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of energy cooperation between Sweden and Mozambique.

As a long-standing and strategic partner to Mozambique, Sweden has provided support with the aim to reach greater access to modern energy and contribute to the improvement of living conditions for poor people, and in particularly to Mozambicans in rural areas.

The Swedish Ambassador, Marie Andersson de Frutos, stressed how Sweden and Mozambique’s partnership have remained strong and united throughout challenging times.

“During the years of energy cooperation, Sweden has followed Mozambique through the difficult times of civil war, which destroyed not only peoples’ livelihoods, but also the infrastructure of the country.” – Marie Andersson de Frutos.

Working mainly through the National Electricity Utility, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) - Sweden has provided support to advance rural electrification, which has directly contributed to providing electricity access to more than 100,000 people in rural areas, and indirectly to many more through electrification of health centers, schools and street lights.

“We’ve also contributed to the on-going rehabilitation and up-grade of the Mavuzi and Chicamba hydro power stations. A project that will guarantee continued renewable and sustainable electricity supply to more than a million people for the next 30 years.” – Marie Andersson de Frutos.

The support also includes capacity building, such as financing of a procurement overhaul as part of the on-going transformation of Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM). The result of that support was presented at the event by Dr. Fátima Arthur, Executive Board Member at EDM.

During the 40-year celebration, the CEO of EDM Dr. Mateus Magala, was thanked for his unwavering contribution to the reform process of the energy sector.
