Marriages in the Philippines

Neither the Embassy in Manila nor the Swedish Honorary Consulate in Cebu can perform or officiate wedding services. Swedish nationals who wants to get married in the Philippines needs to contact local authorities. The Embassy can issue a Certificate of Legal Capacity to Contract Marriage for Swedish nationals intending to get married in the Philippines.

The requirement differs depending on the applicant’s situation. The following are the most common type of legal capacity issued by the Embassy:

  • Swedish citizen to Filipino citizen
  • Two Swedish citizens
  • Swedish citizen to other nationality.

The document can be issued the same day as the application. The fee is PHP 1100 and the issued document will be valid for three months.

Application needs to be made in person by both parties and the required documents needs to be brought in original to the Embassy.

Requirements for Swedish citizens living in Sweden:

  • valid Swedish passport
  • Marriage License issued by the Swedish Tax Agency
  • Certificate of No Marriage (CENOMAR) issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

    If the Swedish national is living outside of Sweden:

    • Instead of the Marriage License the Swedish national must present a copy of an updated Extract of Population Register where current address abroad is indicated
    • the form 'Hindersprövning'. Both the Swedish national and the partner must sign this form in front of the officer at the Embassy
    • Certificate of No Marriage (CENOMAR) issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)
    • Certificate of No Marriage or equivalent from the country of residence as indicated on the Extract of Population of Register
    • valid Swedish Passport.

        Requirements for Filipino citizens:

        • valid Philippine passport
        • Certificate of No Marriage (CENOMAR) issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

        If the philippine citizen is widowed or if previous marriage has been annulled, also provide one of the following documents:

        • Original Death Certificate of deceased spouse issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)
        • Original Marriage Certificate with annotation of annulment issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

          Requirements for other nationality:

            • valid passport
            • Certificate of No Marriage (CENOMAR) issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)
            • Document from the respective Embassy and/or local aouthorities that states that the person is has legal capacity to contract marriage.

            Schedule an appointment to apply for Certification of Legal Capacity to Contract Marriage by sending an e-mail to the Embassy.

            Register the marriage abroad in Sweden

            If you have married abroad, you must show a certificate to the Swedish Tax Agency that the wedding has taken place. If the Swedish Tax Agency decides that the marriage is valid in Sweden, it is registered in the civil registry.
