Welcome to the Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok.
The Embassy in Bangkok is one of the largest Swedish Embassies in Asia and in the world, with more than 70 staff members, both diplomats and locally employed.
A regional mission
The Ambassador of Sweden to Thailand is also side accredited to Myanmar and Laos. This means that the Ambassador, though based in Bangkok, is also the Swedish Ambassador to these countries.
In Myanmar, the Swedish Section Office in Yangon is responsible for the development cooperation and monitoring of political development and in Laos there is an Honorary Consulate.
The Embassy’s section for development cooperation, placed in Bangkok, is responsible for several regional development cooperation programmes in Asia and the Pacific. The focus areas are democracy and human rights, environment and climate, and sustainable communal services.
The Embassy’s activities and priorities in Thailand
Sweden and Thailand established diplomatic relations in 1883.
In addition to the Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok, there are Swedish Honorary Consulates in Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Hua Hin.
The over all role of the Swedish Ambassador to Thailand, is to strengthen the relations between Sweden and Thailand. These relations concern the contacts between our Governments, but also between companies, organisations and our people.
Thailand is one of the most popular Swedish tourist destinations and the consular services are one of the highest prioritised responsibilities of the Embassy. The Consular Section of the Embassy supports Swedish citizens that may need consular support in Thailand.
Many Thais would like to visit Sweden each year and contact the Migration Section of the Embassy of Sweden to apply for Visa or Residence Permits. The Embassy in Bangkok is one of the Swedish Embassies that process the most migration issues each year.
A key task for the Section for Politics, Trade and Promotion is to monitor and report on political developments in our countries. That includes domestic politics and human rights, foreign policy and regional cooperation, climate and the environment, as well as economy and trade.
In the framework of trade promotion, the Embassy is working closely with Business Sweden to support Swedish companies interested in our countries. The Embassy also has a broad mission to communicate information about Sweden, facilitate student and cultural exchanges and to promote values that Sweden stands for. These include human rights and democratic governance, environmental sustainability and gender equality. The Embassy is on Facebook and X.
The Defence Section's role is to represent the Swedish Chief of Defence Force, Secretary of Defence and all members of the Swedish Defence community, in Thailand. This is carried out by means of good working relationships and liaison with all branches of the Thai Ministry of Defence and the Thai Armed Forces.
The Embassy also hosts the Nordic Liaison Office for Police and Customs Cooperation that works closely with the Thai police to fight international crime.
