On Sunday the 14th of July Ingmar Bergman would have turned 101 years old and by that date we can decide that the Ingmar Bergman Year has come to its end. The Ingmar Bergman Foundation has produced a summary of the centenary in English with numbers, insights, close-ups and much more.
The jubilee marking the anniversary of the birth of Ingmar Bergman (1918–2007) – Swedish filmmaker, stage director, and writer of world renown – had been in planning for years. As the year began, the Ingmar Bergman Foundation publicly announced the goal of Bergman 100 becoming the most significant commemoration of a single filmmaker ever. The outcome exceeded the highest expectations. With thousands of events (screenings of his films, stage performances of his works, documentaries, concerts, book releases, conferences, exhibitions, etc) held in eighty-odd countries all over the planet, Bergman 100 was a remarkable success.
More than 84 countries celebrated the Ingmar Bergman centenary 2018. Over 7 700 theatrical screenings of Ingmar Bergmans films were arranged. 74 Bergman stage adaptions were produced during 2018. The plays were performed at theaters in 34 different countries, and 600 000 people watched them. 550 cinematheques, festivals and regular cinemas screened Bergman films in 2018. 15 000 filmgoers (sold out) attended the Ingmar Bergman retrospective at Film Forum in New York, and 23 000 people took part of the retrospective at the film festival in Taiwan. 600 000 viewers watched Fanny and Alexander on Swedish public broadcasting in December 2018, and 60 000 Swedish students received a special paperback edition of Fanny and Alexander as a gift. 600 000 people visited www.ingmarbergman.se in 2018, and it took 14 days before Criterion's exclusive Bergman box sold out. To mention a few numbers.
