Linking Market Vendors with Customers during the COVID19 Lockdown

During the COVID19 lockdown, the ban on public transportation has made it difficult for market vendors to sell their produce and for customers to travel to markets for food. Through a partnership between UN Capital Development Fund and SafeBoda, Sweden has supported the creation of an e-Commerce platform on the SafeBoda app, where customers can order groceries from market vendors.

Through this platform, customers are able to order for food produce on the SafeBoda app and have a rider deliver it to them wherever they are. This has created an opportunity for over 800 market vendors to access the app, giving the 18 000 SafeBoda riders employment during these tough times.

“We envision that use of the SafeBoda app will empower customers to continue using digital platforms, which will increase inclusion and bolster resilience for similar future shocks and stresses, not just in Kampala but in other towns across the country too; including those in Northern Uganda,” Rapa Thomson Ricky, Co-Founder of SafeBoda.
