National statement Delivered by: H.E. Ms Anna Jardfelt, Ambassador, Permanent representative of Sweden to the UN in Geneva
Mr President,
Sweden condemns in the strongest terms Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified aggression, with the involvement of Belarus, against Ukraine.
The overwhelming and cross-regional unity in condemning Russia’s aggression demonstrates a strong commitment for the rules-based world order and fundamental rules of international law. Sweden remains a strong political and financial supporter to the multilateral system, with the UN at its core.
Sweden’s commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law is also steadfast. Scientific evidence shows that democracy is the best foundation for a sustainable society. The same evidence shows that democracies do not go to war against each other. This is why we launched our Drive for Democracy in 2019.
Civil and political rights and social, economic, and cultural rights are mutually dependent and reinforcing. We must ensure that everyone can enjoy their human rights, which is a prerequisite to achieve gender equality and sustainable development.
Human rights defenders play a crucial role. They put their own lives at risk to fight for their and others full enjoyment of human rights.
Sweden will do its part to help counter these alarming trends, as a strong voice for the multilateral system, human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
