National Statement by Sweden Delivered by Mr. Fredrik Nivaeus, Minister Counselor, Deputy Permanent Representative of Sweden to the UN in Geneva
Mr President,
Sweden aligns itself with the EU. Our determination to protect democracy, human rights and the rule of law is steadfast.
We strongly condemn Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Russian violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in Ukraine must end. The repression within Russia is increasing, worsening an already extremely difficult situation, including for civil society, human rights defenders, political opponents and journalists. The same is true in Belarus, where the broadening of the scope of the death penalty adds to our concerns.
The human rights situation in Afghanistan continues to be extremely worrisome, in particular for women and girls, including recent restrictions to freedom of movement and their right to education. We call for an immediate halt to human rights violations and abuses in Ethiopia and support ongoing international and national efforts towards accountability.
We reiterate our condemnation of the military coup and the violence against civilians in Myanmar. Those arbitrarily detained must be immediately released. Sweden supports efforts towards a return to a democratic path.
The human rights situation in China remains deeply concerning, including in Xinjiang, Hongkong and Tibet. We urge China to respect international law including human rights, especially the right to freedom of expression and the rights of persons belonging to minorities. The continued arbitrary detention of Swedish and EU citizen Gui Minhai must end. We encourage the High Commissioner to release the announced report on the situation in Xinjiang.
In Iran the situation not least for human rights defenders and ethnic and religious minorities is deeply worrying. The use of counter-terrorism legislation to restrict human rights in Egypt and Saudi Arabia remains seriously concerning. Freedom of expression and assembly must be ensured. Sweden condemns the use of the death penalty in all circumstances.
Human rights violations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory continues to be concerning, including settler violence and violence against children. The Palestinian government needs to ensure respect for human rights in areas under its control. In Gaza, serious human rights violations remain worrying.
Wherever human rights violations and abuses occur, accountability must be ensured.
