Sweden aligns itself with the statement made by the EU and warmly thank Special Rapporteur Andrews for his update.
Sweden is deeply concerned about the continued human rights violations and abuses, including sexual and gender-based violence and violations and abuses against children in Myanmar including in Rakhine, Kachin and Shan states.
We recall the need for all parties and armed groups to immediately end violence and all violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law and to allow for humanitarian access to all those in need.
Genuine efforts to address the root causes of discrimination and persecution of the Rohingya population, including by ensuring freedom of movement and citizenship are needed, as well as active steps to create conditions for repatriation, based on principles of voluntary, safe and dignified return.
Sweden welcomes international efforts to ensure justice and accountability in Myanmar, including at the ICJ and the ICC.
Myanmar is undergoing a fragile democratic transition. We urge all political stakeholders to ensure inclusive, free, fair and credible elections, enabling the participation of the entire electorate without discrimination.
We see journalist and other media workers being silenced. Mr Special Rapporteur, in this context, what would be your key recommendations ahead of the upcoming elections in Myanmar this year?
