Swedish Intervention at Clustered Interactive Dialogue with UN Independent Expert on human rights and international solidarity

Swedish Intervention during the 38th session at the Human Rights Council.

Distinguished Professor Okafor, Independent Expert,

On behalf of Sweden, I wish to begin by thanking you for your first report as mandate holder as Independent Expert on human rights and international solidarity.

To tackle the global challenges facing human rights and the universal impact of the 2030 Agenda, the promotion of a fair and sustainable development is more relevant than ever, not least to ensure the promotion, protection and fulfilment of all human rights for every individual.

Sweden has a long tradition of working to strengthen and defend human rights, democracy and the rule of law. We have implemented this also for quite some years now in our development cooperation.

Sweden applies a rights-based perspective and a perspective of poor people on development, to ensure that the situations, needs and priorities of poor people is the point of departure for fighting poverty and promoting fair and achievable sustainable development.

We thank you Mr Independent Expert for your visit to Sweden in April this year.  We wish to express our gratitude for your positive statements as you concluded your observations from your meetings and visits with a broad range of actors.

We look forward to receiving the report of your findings and recommendations at the next June-session.

Thank you, Mr Independent Expert
