UPR 36th session - Statement by Sweden in the review of Croatia

Statement delivered by Ambassador Anna Jardfelt.

Madam President,

Sweden acknowledges the continued work of the Government of Croatia to improve the situation of human rights by establishing an adequate legislative framework, but is concerned by the existence of hateful rhetoric towards national minorities. We would like to encourage further efforts with regards to the implementation and enforcement of the legislation, especially on national minorities, legislative and institutional framework, and for LGBTI-persons.

Sweden would therefore like to make the following recommendations:

  1. Take further measures to condemn incitement to hatred and hate crimes against national minorities, not least the Serb minority.
  2. Ensure that the whistleblower function of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Croatia is effective, not least by providing adequate funding.
  3. Amend the national legislation to specifically include same-sex partnerships in relevant laws.

Thank you
