#MediaFika to talk about media and democracy

On 26 February 2020, the Embassy invited representatives from Zambia's media sector to the Swedish Residence for a #DemocracyTalk.

As part of Sweden's Drive for Democracy the Embassy is organizing a series of Democracy Talks, with various actors and stakeholders in Zambia, to engage, create debate and get people talking on democracy and it's principles - globally and locally.

The Embassy invited a selected group of Zambian journalists representing online and offline media as well as partner organizations working in the media sector. The aim was to create a platform for conversations and interactions about democracy and the role of the media.

A free and independent media is a cornerstone in a democratic society. The afternoon at the residence offered vibrant discussions, great contributions and exchanges on questions such as what is democracy? and What is the role of media as a driver for democracy?

Participants represented newspapers, blogs and radio, Embassy staff as well as Sweden's partners from civil society were BBC Media Action Zambia and Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA).

Two of the participating journalists have previously traveled to Sweden on media visits, organized by the Swedish Institute. A third journalist is traveling to Stockholm next week to attend the media visit on Stockholm Women in Tech.
