Sveriges och Eduardo Mondlane Universitetet firar 40 års forskningssamarbete i Moçambique

Sweden and Eduardo Mondlane University are celebrating 40 years of research cooperation. To mark this special occasion, a conference is being held at Universidade Eduardo to highlight the scientific advances as part of the cooperation and their impact on the economic development of Mozambique.

The Conference will also promote a discussion of prospects for cooperation between Sweden and UEM and the challenges that Mozambique faces in achieving a sustainable research environment.

Cooperation between Sweden and Eduardo Mondlane University began in 1978, at a time when few Mozambicans had a university degree. In the initial phase, support was directed towards the development of research capacity through training of researchers abroad.

Research cooperation has resulted in more than 140 doctorates among EMU members, who are now active researchers in universities, mainly at UEM or hold other important posts in the country.

The conference is attended by researchers who had and continue to have a key role in this cooperation, and will also highlight the importance of regional cooperation, including the role of universities in South Africa.

Around 300 people are expected to attend the event, including researchers, representatives of governmental and nongovernmental organizations, representatives of other Mozambican universities and other countries in the region, the Minister of Science and Technology, the Ambassador of Sweden, the Rector of UEM, and others.
